New FrontRow On Any Mac

Apple has updated FrontRow with some very cool networking features. Normally FrontRow wont run on a mac without Apple’s built in IR reciever, but thanks to Andrew Escobar and his excellent FrontRow Enabler anyone with Mac OS X 10.4.5 can use FrontRow. Add a cheap Keyspan IR reciever and your favorite programable remote or Gyro mouse and your good to go.

Real Tomacco

In one the greatest Simpson episodes ever Homer planted tobacco seeds, tomato seeds, gummi bears, and some plutonium and was rewarded with an excellent crop of Tomacco. This guy couldn’t find any plutonium (or the gummi bears??) so he grafted a tomato plant right to some tobacco roots. Genius!

Google Earth Mac OS X Beta Leaked

The Mac OS X beta of Google Earth has been leaked, and it works pretty damn well.
“Google Earth puts a planet’s worth of imagery and other geographic information right on your desktop. View exotic locales like Maui and Paris as well as points of interest such as local restaurants, hospitals, schools, and more.”
The beta can be found here. If you want to sue someone over posting it, try these guys.

Acclaim Publishing Rights Auction
Acclaim, one of the largest video game publishers in the world, is bankrupt. So all of their publishing rights are up for auction at very low prices. Classics like Bubble Bobble, Mortal Kombat, and NBA Jams. Lucrative cross liscenses like The Simpsons and South Park. I might pick a few up just to make some of my MAME roms legal.

Nuclear Globe

What drunk college student wouldn’t want this?? It’a 6 foot tall bubble that you can get in and do battle on the water!
“Have a blast in the Nuclear Globe! Climb inside this giant 6-foot sphere and rock-and-roll across the water. The inset cups on the outer surface help grip and paddle your way through the water as you spin the globe. Using two Nuclear Globes, you can engage in Nuclear Face-Off as you and an oppponent compete to bump and bounce each other into submission. Prepare for combat!”
When your finished battling and pass out on the beach in Cancun, the locals can use it to float to America.

Outsource your entire life
This article from Esquire magazine is a must read. The writer outsourced his entire life to India. One personal assistant for his job, and another for his personal life. Both of them in cubicles 10,000 miles away, managing every little detail. Everything from research work to gift buying. The writer keeps pushing the limits of both the assistants and the people in his life.

Mac OS 7.5.5 on the PSP
This chick installed BOCHS (an x86 emulator) on a Sony PSP. Then she installed FreeDos and Basilisk II/vMac (Mac 68k emulators). Sure it takes 4 hours to boot, and has no keyboard/mouse support, but it’s still damn cool. She should have taken it one more step and installed STELLA for some Atari 2600 action!
All the required files are available from her site as well.
(Thanks Oldies)

High School band plays Endtroducing…

This video of a high school percussion band playing songs from DJ Shadow’s Endtroducing.. is incredible. From the composer’s website:
“In the Winter and Spring of 2005, I started the Shadow Percussion Project, where I attempted to adapt a few tracks off DJ Shadow’s remarkable album Endtroducing for a live performance group. By mid-February I had arranged both Building Steam with a Grain of Salt and Changeling for Percussion Quintet. Eager to hear what these arrangements sounded like, I brought the music to the Minnetonka High School Percussion Ensemble, an extracurricular music program that I instruct. The students responded to the music positively, even though it was extremely challenging. After a few months of intense rehearsal, the students performed both tracks for a live audience on Monday, May 16 2005. The following video contains the final performance.”
In other semi-related news, I recieved my Public Works package today. The only delemma is “Do I wear the shirts or try and save them??” But I know, no matter how hard I try and save them, I will end up wearing them all. Maybe I’ll post some photo’s of the unboxing if anyone cares.

Teleport Rules

I know I say this about a new application every month, but Teleport is my new favorite application for Mac OS X.
If you use more than one mac at a time, and each have their own monitors, this application lets you share a single keyboard and mouse between the two (or more) computers. Way cooler than any KVM switch and you can use it with your laptops. Their description:
” teleport is a simple utility to let you use one single mouse and keyboard to control several of your Macs. Works on Panther and Tiger (sorry, no more Jaguar support).
Simply reach the edge of your screen, and your mouse teleports to your other Mac! The pasteboard can even be synchronized between the computers.”
